Welcome to our Linux Audyssey
November 30th, 2006Welcome to the official launch of Linux Audyssey.
Like the Heart of Gold in Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, our journey has similarly been powered by an improbability drive - hence the slogan of our production company:
“Terakuma Productions - where the impossible and the unthinkable occur daily.”
This site is primarily a blog - at least for now - but will most likely evolve into a more general site dealing with all things to do with Linux audio and home music production.
(At least those things that we have some experience with or knowledge about.)
This blog is going to be a rather strange creature - moving both backwards and forward in time simultaneously.
I meant to start this many months ago when we were at a much earlier stage with our endeavor, but found myself far too caught up in the struggle to have time to write about it.
Further, I was terribly discouraged in those early days - and rather embarassed - thinking the difficulties we were encountering were due to lack of knowledge and experience on my part, and didn’t exactly wish to advertise my ignorance.
However, it is through our mistakes that we learn, and indeed, we have learned a great deal in the past 10 months, not the least of which is to not judge oneself for the difficulties one experiences or the mistakes made along the way.
I will have to start this story in the ‘middle’, but since I don’t think it has an end, that really doesn’t matter.
I am going to mix posts concerning the background of our Linux audio endeavor with posts regarding the current state of affairs, as well as those pertaining to the roadmap outlining where we hope to be going.
I will try to clarify which posts relate to which time period through the use of categories:
‘The Road Less Traveled‘ is the current category title for posts detailing the history of how we designed and built our Linux Audio DAW, as well as the Linux Audio operating sytem we are using.
‘The Road Ahead‘, obviously, pertains to what we are considering doing in the future.
Other self-explanatory categories, will contain posts that deal with various areas of Linux Audio production:
Linux (issues specifically to do with the Linux OS)
Hardware (both PC and outboard hardware issues.)
Software (programs we are using, problems, tips and tweaks)
AMD64 (issues specifically to do with the AMD64 architecture.)
Other categories will include: Composing, Recording, Mixing, Mastering, Licensing, Marketing and general Linux Audio News.
Please bear with me as I learn how to use the Wordpress blogging software and figure out what kind of layout works best.
The initial motivation for this site was personal.
The path we have followed to this point has turned out to be so full of unexpected twists, turns and unforeseen challenges, that I felt it would be instructive, as well as therapeutic, to begin keeping a log, which would allow us to look back on where we had started from and what we had learned and accomplished on the way to the place where we currently find ourselves.
I hope, as we become more experienced and adept at what we are trying to do, that this site will become less personal and more generally useful to others - especially those, like ourselves, who are new to Linux Audio, Linux in general, and/or home recording and production.
I also hope that at some point I will be able to persuade the silent member of this partnership - Dzyan - to share his insights on these subjects, and contribute his verbal as well as his musical voice.
Welcome aboard - and thank you for joining us on our journey!
